Job Summary:
The Community Foundation is seeking a dynamic and experienced Accounting Associate to join our team. The Accounting Associate will play a crucial role in advancing our mission by providing essential accounting support to the Department of Finance (DOF) and managing various finance-related tasks. In this position, the Accounting Associate will assist in maintaining accurate financial records, processing transactions, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, highly organized, and proactive in assisting with day-to-day accounting functions, including preparing financial reports, managing accounts payable and receivable, and supporting budget tracking and analysis. Key Responsibilities:
• Accounts Payable – Work with Accounting Assistant to ensure accurate fund-accounting and recording of payables. Maintain and adhere to a payables schedule for repetitive payments to ensure timeliness of payment processing.
• Deposits & Gift Recording – deposit checks electronically and maintain log for periodic transfers to investment accounts. Review and move gifts from Gift module to General Ledger in accounting system for DOF to post.
• Affiliate Financials – prepare affiliate financial statements and assist with ad-hoc financial information and reporting as needed or requested by affiliates.
• Journal Entry Preparation – review journal entries and supporting documentation prepared by Accounting Assistant for DOF to approve and post.
• Audit – Assist DOF with annual audit and tax schedule report preparation.
• Budgets – Assist DOF with preparation and tracking of annual expense budget, including geographic affiliates, initiatives, grant-making and scholarship budgets.
• Fund Statements – review fund statements prepared by accounting assistant for DOF approval and coordinate distribution of statements to donors
• General Accounting – prepare monthly reconciliations of investment and checking accounts for DOF review and approval.
• Fixed Asset Accounting – maintain records of asset additions and depreciation schedules as well as lease schedules and leased equipment tracking.
• Meeting Packets – compile materials and reports for quarterly Investment Committee meetings, Finance and Audit Committee meetings, and other finance-related committee and Board materials as required.
• Reconciliations – Perform regular reconciliation of investment and bank accounts, ensuring that all transactions are accurately reflected in the accounting system.
• Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
• Highly motivated self-starter with an aptitude for problem-solving and the ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision
• Proven track record of exhibiting sound judgment and demonstrating high ethical standards
• Excellent project management skills and an ability to meet deadlines with meticulous accuracy
• Proven knowledge of accounting and financial systems and superior analytical skills
• Outstanding written, verbal, presentation and interpersonal skills
• Knowledge of GAAP and FASB standards and IRS regulations as they apply to nonprofit agencies or community foundations, in particular.
• Knowledge of the nonprofit sector, foundations, and investment management
• Fluency with the Microsoft Office Suite of products as well as an aptitude for understanding organization-specific software packages and various investment management software packages
• Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting or a similar degree with equivalent experience. Minimum of five years of senior level accounting experience. Fund accounting experience and CPA preferred. Institutional investment management experience desirable.
Supervision
The Accounting Associate reports to the Finance Director of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation.

FLSA Status:
Hybrid, full-time, exempt 40 hours per week
Office Hours: 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Salary & Benefits:
Salary range: $60,000 to $65,000 annually
