We are seeking engineering interns to join us during this exciting transition for the opportunity to learn on the job while working with our team on some of the largest and most consequential transmission and distribution projects in the region. As an engineering intern at Minnesota Power your work will have an impact on climate, customers and communities. When you join our Transmission & Distribution Planning team you will gain broad exposure to the many diverse aspects of electric utility operations, help us plan the grid of the future, and work together to develop projects that will make a difference as we navigate the challenges of our industry.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support comprehensive, coordinated, and transparent planning of Minnesota Power’s transmission & distribution systems in order to provide reliable and economic service to customers while navigating a rapidly evolving utility landscape
- Contribute to developing the grid of the future through analysis and planning of grid modernization programs such as feeder automation, non-wire alternatives analysis, distribution hosting capacity analysis, and distributed energy resource (DER) interconnection studies
- Assist with and perform transmission & distribution studies to evaluate current and future system needs and develop solutions that support the rapidly-changing ways in which electricity is being produced and consumed, modernize aging infrastructure, and implement new and emerging technology
- Prepare formal planning reports and project scope documentation
- Participate in collaborative development of major transmission & distribution projects with a cross-functional team of internal stakeholders to ensure successful and coordinated project outcomes
- Assist with providing ongoing technical support for internal and external stakeholders for project planning, development, and implementation, as well as any required regulatory filings
- Research new technology for potential corporate application to support grid modernization, improved reliability, and the integration of distributed resources
- Successful candidates will have demonstrated ability to work independently, creatively solve problems, and show strong interpersonal and communication skills
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must currently be enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program with an expected graduation date between December 2025 and May 2027
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as occasional travel may be required
- Candidates may be subject to assessment of skills, job match, or aptitude
DETAILS & DURATION OF INTERNSHIP:
- This internship will report in person to Duluth, MN
- This role is expected to begin no later than June 2025
- The internship will be full time during summer with the possibility of extending to a part time basis during academic terms up until graduation
