Duluth’s unique physical beauty and diverse cultural environment create our competitive advantage. Our people work together, with respect for each other, to ensure that development is consistent with Duluth’s character as an urban wilderness. Our community is a welcoming and safe place to live offering high skilled, quality employment. Duluth is a place where every resident has opportunities to thrive and succeed.
If the aforementioned description properly depicts our community, then the vision for Duluth, established in 1995, is being realized. If the description seems abstract, then we still have work to do before we are a beloved community, located within the shining city on the hill.
Regardless of how we view Duluth’s evolution, we have reason for optimism. Mayor Larson and her talented City of Duluth leadership team are engaging in discussions all over our Zenith City to encourage us to imagine what Duluth should look like, and feel like, nineteen years from now. This exciting, bold initiative is called Imagine Duluth 2035, Forward Together.
You can get the details by visiting the website, ImagineDuluth.com, or connecting with the effort on social media at @ImagineDuluth on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Additionally, you can contact the City’s Community Planning Division personnel by emailing CompPlan@duluthmn.gov. Or, call 218-730-5580 if you would like to speak with one of the talented team members in the planning department. You can also attend one of the upcoming focus group meetings that will be promoted within these many communication mediums.
This noble planning and visioning initiative will result in an updated Comprehensive Plan for Duluth. The current plan is ten years old. The Comprehensive Plan provides the City’s road map for development. It also determines the delivery of public services, along with the layout of public infra-structure. Finally, it determines how to most effectively preserve our City’s natural beauty and open spaces.
The economic development component of the Comprehensive Plan update will provide an in-depth review of the local economy while identifying strategies and projects to improve Duluth’s economy. This planning component will also identify locations for future development. The Chamber’s Board of Directors encourages Duluthians to engage in this specific planning effort. We welcome you adding your voice to this important discussion.
I hope to see you at one of the upcoming Imagine Duluth 2035 gatherings.
David Ross, President & CEO
