Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce Announces Support for Proposed Hermantown Data Center Project

September 2, 2026 —DULUTH, Minn. — The Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce has formally adopted a resolution supporting the proposed Google Data Center Project in Hermantown, citing the project’s potential to strengthen the region’s economic base, advance technology infrastructure, and support future growth.

The Chamber’s support is grounded in its strategic priorities of improving business conditions, advancing economic development, and supporting community progress.

“We believe the proposed Hermantown Data Center represents a significant investment not only in technology and economic development, but in the infrastructure and community assets that will support future growth. As a regional business organization, we have a responsibility to advocate for opportunities that strengthen our economy and create the conditions for businesses and communities to thrive,” said Pat deGrood, chair of the Board of Directors at the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce and vice president of commercial services, The Jamar Company.

Economic analysis referenced in the Chamber’s resolution projects that Google’s investment in St. Louis County could support approximately 1,100 jobs per year and contribute an average of $136 million annually to regional GDP between 2026 and 2029.
The project also includes an estimated $130 million commitment toward public infrastructure, including roads, water and sewer improvements, along with significant investments in Hermantown schools and community initiatives.
The Chamber also considered the project’s energy and environmental implications.

“Energy and environmental considerations are appropriately part of the conversation around a project of this size, and we believe those issues deserve careful and continued attention,” said Jim Roche, interim president of the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce. “At the same time, Google has already demonstrated a willingness to listen and respond to local concerns, including modifying the project’s design to better align with feedback from the community. The commitments associated with this project—including new renewable energy generation, battery storage, energy-efficiency investments, and infrastructure improvements—also demonstrate that these concerns are being addressed as part of the broader development. We support continued collaboration and transparency among Google, Minnesota Power, the City of Hermantown, and the community as the project moves forward.”

Under the proposed Electric Service Agreement, the project would add 300 megawatts of new wind energy and 400 megawatts of battery storage to the regional grid. Google has also committed $5 million to support energy affordability and efficiency for medium- and low-income households.

The Chamber believes the potential benefits of the project extend beyond the project site and could create opportunities for businesses, workers, and communities throughout the Twin Ports and northeastern Minnesota.

The Chamber’s resolution encourages continued collaboration among Google, Minnesota Power, the City of Hermantown, and regional stakeholders to ensure transparent communication, responsible development, and shared long-term benefits for residents and businesses.
